I think it is fair to say, even as we set off, we were unsure of quite what to expect….little did we know what treasure was in store.
For me, right from the time we arrived, there was a complete feeling of serenity – the whole place was one of unassuming beauty and absolute tranquillity.
We were greeted by our hosts, Ellen and Rosemary. Our day started with coffee in the rose garden where we listened to a little of the history of the Daughters of Wisdom and Wisdom House itself.
The Daughters of Wisdom is a multi-national, Catholic organisation which was founded by St Louis DE Montfort.
“Daughters of Wisdom throughout the ages have endeavoured to follow their founder’s example in reflecting the face of Christ of Wisdom and showing immense love to wounded humanity.”
While religion is an obvious implication, that’s as much as it was – it mattered not what faith or beliefs you have – if any, Wisdom House is quite simply a beautiful place, an oasis of calm, to be enjoyed by one and all.
Ellen and Rosemary showed us around the house, we were allowed access to all areas, each room with its own appeal. Following this, we were then taken out into the grounds and shown the almost ‘secret’ gardens and labyrinth.
With flowers, like jewels of all colours, peeping at us from every angle were breathtaking – no regimented rows, just scattered – growing as nature intended – beautiful – and the scent of Lavender and Jasmine, in particular, wafting about on the warm breeze – just heavenly.
Within the grounds is the quaintest of cottages, ‘Chez Nous’, while being renovated at present, is usually available to rent….the perfect venue for a quiet weekend get away.
So, time for more coffee, we gathered then for meditation, lead by Rosemary. I think we all agreed at just how relaxing yet powerful this was, I for one can honestly say I am still feeling the effects of this some week on.
Now completely relaxed, most of the group took a leisurely stroll alongside the river to the local park – again – most picturesque, a lovely walk.
We returned in time for lunch, and what a treat it was, all home made and beautifully presented by Jade. There was a selection of salads and piping hot buttered new potatoes to accompany freshly poached salmon, baked ham as well as a selection of cheeses. Then to follow, as if this wasn’t enough, a medley of fresh fruit – melon, strawberries and pineapple – with lashings of crème fraiche – absolutely delicious!
Rosemary and Ellen joined us for lunch, they were insistent we did nothing, and would not let us as much as clear our plates away.
Following lunch, with Romsey Abbey just a stone’s throw away, we wandered across to have a look around. The Abbey itself is magnificent and, as if by fate, there was to be a performance by a male voice choir there in the evening, so we had the added bonus of listening to them rehearse as we sauntered around.
The labyrinth, an ancient symbol of prayer and meditation, was a must – we all took time to follow its path, with all its twists and turns, giving time for quiet thoughts.
Towards the end of our day, we had the opportunity for some art and craft activities, while this wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it was optional and surprisingly relaxing. Some made butterflies while others made little ‘beach hut’ gift boxes which we brought home as keepsakes.
Our visit ended with tea and cake in the rose garden, giving time to reflect on the day which had been just perfect.
Rosemary and Ellen had been perfect hosts, they really couldn’t have been kinder or more attentive.
Wisdom House is a wonderful place to visit, the weather had been ideal, lovely company, a truly memorable day.
Would I go again…..definitely…….would I recommend to others…..absolutely!
